The leader of BIGBANG, G-Dragon and BIGBANG's main rapper T.O.P. teamed up and became a powerful sub-unit that took over the holidays with their G-H-E-T-T-O E-L-E-C-T-R-O and 'OH YEAH!'. GD&TOP Vol. 1 was 'step 1' to hype up the fangirls for BIGBANG's comeback album.GD and TOP aren't just boy band idols. They are true artists and this album reaffirmed this fact. It's pretty surprising that this album was actually controversial for their lyrics and their videos, leading to getting banned in one of the leading stations, MBC. It's admirable how YGE (their record label) didn't cave in to the pressure of changing the lyrics to fit MBC's standards. Message they sent out? Money doesn't matter, this was an expression of our artists' creativity.
What I greatly appreciate about the album is that the music seemed more western, thus more universal. We may have no clue what they're saying, but how they rap, how they sing, the music... the 'oooohs' the 'ahhhhhs'... you can just tell what they're saying. If you are new to Kpop, this will hook you in. Want your friends to listen to kpop? This will be a good transition for them, I'm sure.
Favorite song? OH YEAH ft. Park Bom. Oddest song? 어쩌란 말이냐? by GD (honestly, first time I listened to it, I was like, 'WTF?' This is the rock song of the album and it's a riot!) My disappointment? OH MOM by TOP, it's a rare occurrence for our lover (heh) to show his singing abilities instead of doing what he does best, rapping. And honestly, while we love our soon to be husband, he should stick to what he's good at. If you have nothing not auto-tuned to sing, it's best to sing nothing at all. xD
