Can You Hear My Heart?

I'm 9 episodes in so I will have to come back and report what I have found, but thus far, this is our review of the beginning of the drama which is set to have an epic 30 episodes!

It starts slow and we find this to be a positive thing; the more background we have, the more realistic it seems when their actions come to play. Although there are still flashbacks here and there, it's not as if you have to watch the flashbacks to understand why a character is 'this way'. You already know from what you watched in the beginning thus if you hate a character, you don't have to be wary that they are actually good people. This might not be something you worry about... but for me, it's always a peeve. I love to keep hating who I hate. Don't make me pity them! [/rant]

That said, about 5 episodes are dedicated to the life of the main characters while they were kids. You find out that our male lead ( Cha Dong Joo) isn't a rich snob, but a good mannered kid who is happy and fun--while being rich! (It was a shocker to see honestly...) Our main girl (Bong Woo Ri), besides her mother, doesn't have any relatives. She doesn't go to school since her mother is too poor and she has difficulty communicating with her mother on account of her mother being deaf.

Can You Hear My Heart? starts off with a family that consists of a grandmother, a father and a son who are all stuck in poverty. The father is mentally handicapped and the son (Jang Joon Ha) is ashamed of his family and how his life is. It turns out that his father has found love with a single mother who also has a handicap, but her's is that she's deaf. Woo Ri (main girl) is thrilled she'll finally have a family, but Joon Ha is angered that his family is going to be more of a freakshow if he had a deaf mother.

Cha Dong Joo wasn't born deaf thus when he gets in an accident and can't hear anymore, it's easier when he decides to hide it from everyone. Of course, a couple of people know he is deaf and they work with him to overcome that since he is set to take over his grandfather's company. He can't be seen as ill fit to do the job.

Bong Woo Ri is still looking for her missing stepbrother who had runaway the same day her mother had died in an accident. She has taken care of her step-father and step-grandmother since she was nine years old.

This drama has it's funny moments so far, but you can't say it's a comedy. It is full of touching moments and anguish and it's cute at the same time. I think we found a nice balance in this.

If you loved King of Baking, Kim Tak Goo, you'll also love Can You Hear My Heart?.

We give it 4/5 (SO FAR!) for its solid plot, great acting and the production quality. We love it, but aren't obsessed yet. You? On a side note, we don't know who the love triangles revolves around yet? This makes us optimistic on the future development of the plot.

Dramafully: 4/5
